As with many of his hip hop contemporaries, Avalon’s music seems pretty intrinsically tied in with his turbulent, unhappy upbringing. His father was a heroin addict, whilst his mother provided for the family by dealing cannabis, meaning that Avalon’s early years were marked by uncertainty and trouble. In a cruel twist of fate, his father managed to get clean, but was hit by a car after leaving an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting - the driver was drunk. At the age of nineteen, Avalon was forced to make the heart-wrenching decision to take his father off life support.
Avalon himself struggled with heroin addiction in his late teens; he prostituted himself to pay for his habit, whilst his sister - also an addict - would go on to die of an overdose whilst they were living together. Music gave Avalon his escape from a world of misery, and began to work with ex-MTV producer Simon Rex. He released a self-titled debut album in 2006, and went onto support the likes of Red Hot Chili Peppers and Ke$ha on tour. He’s also recorded and toured with Rex and others under the name Dyslexic Speedreaders, but has most recently been focusing on his solo career again, releasing a second album, ‘Loaded’, in 2012 and an EP, ‘I Get Even’, in 2013.
Mickey Avalon is an artist unlike any other. As a result, his performance is certainly one of a kind. With one of the biggest complaints of the modern rap artist being the preaching of the same redundant themes, Mickey Avalon offers a very different perspective. This is the perspective of a former drug addict and male prostitute, and his music conveys that in what I think is actually one of the most entertaining rap performances out there today.
Avalon clearly made a point to set his show apart from your typical rap show, coming out on stage wearing tight jeans, some pretty serious eyeliner and no shirt. It’s cool to see someone with a new take on such an established genre. That being said, for an artist defying the conventions of typical rap, this guy can perform with the best of them! He may be making a statement but it compliments his provocative lyrics and does not distract from his incredibly likeable hooks and beats. He’s only released two albums but he has several singles that have been fairly popular in the independent rap community, particularly “Mr. Right” and “Jane Fonda”. A good deal of the small audience knew the lyrics to these and sang aloud, making a nice, loud, raunchy atmosphere that you’d be hard-pressed to find at any other show. You’ll never see another show like Mickey Avalon. With his concoction of rap, pop hooks and evident sexuality, Avalon gives a great performance for anyone looking to adventure outside of the conventions of typical rap.
