Derek Andrew Safo, or Sway, came to the forefront of our attention in the early 2000’s seemingly riding on the coattails of an apparent “Grimewave” of UK MC’s such as Dizzee Rascal and Roll Deep who had found mainstream crossover success. However it became quickly apparent that Sway offered something different compared to his peers, who often focused on the harsh realitys of street life in modern Britain.
Instead the MC from North London offered more humorous aspect of social commentary through his rhymes, with observations on British society often the topic. Take for example the hook; “Now I Gotta Get A Job I Gotta Work Work, Cus These Bloody Credit Cards Dont Work Work” on one of his breakout singles “Flo Fashion”, a track about living beyond your means, taken from his mercury prize nominated debut album “This Is My Demo.” Sways thoughtful and witty lyricism make his songs memorable and this is clear when he performs live, wearing his signature neckerchief, with the audience often rapping along word for word, much to his delight. Watching him perform live is almost like being at a hip-hop gospel church, with Sway as the pastor.
Sway was last seen performing in the UK as the support act for Example on his national tour in 2013. However since signing with Akon’s Konvict Muzik record label, his his new album “The Deliverance” is expected to release soon and you may want to keep an eye out for tickets as this is a UK Hip-Hop experience you don’t want to miss out on!
