You don't find one of kinds that often and last night I shared a stage with one. Maia sharp. My new favorite singer songwriting friend. We were paired together by Bonnie Raitt to work on a few tracks on "dig in deep", but we both now know that Bonnie was matchmaking!
I've felt an immediate bond as we started shedding the songs for Bonnie and a normal 3-4 hour session moved into dinner time and no one was really hungry! Loving and laughing all the day through, I left the studio wishing I could see Maia again. This is a love story in the purest sense. I was smitten! Taken by her wit and quick humor and yet her love and gentle approach to her work.
Later that year she asked if I would record with her, but I was traveling and the time I had free I had booked sessions in France, so as friends would do we made time for one another. I had her send the tracks to Marseille, we recorded them and sent them back. Mind you I was afraid there might have been a chance she'd hate what I had done but thank god she was over the moon, and kept every last breathe I sang for her songs.
Sure enough I got back home and there was Maia reaching out again to add to two more tracks. I was invited to her home, got to meet her family we cemented our friendship.
So when she put her band together for the VPAC show at her former school CSUN, I was asked to sing with her live, which brought us back full circle to Bonnie Raitt, who Maia opened the night for and shared the stage with.
This is my take on an amazing night I'll not soon forget and I can always judge but how I can get to sleep after experiences I want to remember for a lifetime.
