– breaking several Billboard chart records when 14 of his songs debuted on the Hot Digital Songs chart and 11 of his songs debuted on the Hot 100. Cook has since gone on to sell more than 2 million albums (including his platinum-certified eponymous album) and, collectively, more than 5 million tracks (including two platinum-certified singles) worldwide. After a move to Nashville, TN, David continued to find success, not only for himself (his 2015 studio album, DIGITAL VEIN, debuted in the top 5 on the Billboard Pop Chart) but also as a writer for other artists. Cook continues to tour throughout the world in support of his multiple hits.
2018 brought an exciting new EP from Cook – CHROMANCE and, if putting out his 2018 EP wasn’t enough to keep Cook busy, that same year he headed to the Great White Way for his Broadway debut as Charlie Price in KINKY BOOTS. And he has no plans to slow it down. “I love creative endeavors. I like starting with nothing and then finishing with something that didn’t exist before. That’s my favorite thing about creating new music. I love being able to put something artistic out in the world for people to enjoy.”
And that’s what he is doing. In 2020, David released two new singles. The first, REDS TURN BLUE, is a nod to the manic highs (reds) and lows (blues) of anxiety, something David has struggled to overcome since his season seven win on American Idol. And the second, STRANGE WORLD, is "my homage to this year," said David. "Staring out of windows at the world outside, feeling disconnected from it, and trying to find those moments that would normally exist outside, inside." Both singles, along with the driving FIRE are from his EP, THE LOOKING GLASS, released in April 2021.
In April 2022, David released his latest single, TABOS (This'll All Be Over Soon). The single's release coincided with his return to the American Idol stage to perform for their special 20th-anniversary reunion show.
Howard's musical fascinations came early in life, at age five he began to play a piano his mother bought at an auction. When Day's mother noticed her son's musical talents which included being able to play by ear tunes of television advertising jingles, she enrolled him in piano lessons, which he continued for six years. At the age of 13 his father bought him a Fender Stratocaster and enrolled him in basic vocal training after he showed an interest in rock music. Day played in a local band called Route 66 throughout 1997 until booking agent Shawn Radley discovered him the following year while Day was supporting Ziggy Marley at the University of Maine.
The following year Howie recorded his first demo EP, which contained covers of songs by Dave Matthews Band, Barenaked Ladies and Goo Goo dolls alongside the originals 'Buzzing' and 'Lick My Lips'. This EP was followed later in 1998 by another demo consisting wholly of Day's originals once he'd established his sound. In 2000 he self financed and self released his debut album 'Australia' and despite a mixed response from critics it charted at #18 on the US Heatseekers chart.
The follow-up 'Stop All The World Now' was recorded after Howard relocated to London and was released in October of 2003. It charted much better in the US, breaking into the Billboard album charts at #46. It also featured Howie's first hit single, 'Collide' which peaked at #20 on the singles chart. Once again the album was met with mixed reviews from critics. Howie's fan base had grown substantially and he embarked on a large tour in September to promote the album ahead of release and then toured non-stop for three years after the album was released. He says this is one reason his next album 'Sound The Alarm' came six years later, it features a mixture of sounds due to Day recording in several different locations around the globe and collaborating with various producers.
The band was formed at D.C's Georgetown University by guitarists and vocalists Keith Kane and Matthew Scannell. The duo cut their teeth by playing sets consisting mainly of covers in places ranging from local bars and clubs to their own university campus' food court. By the end of 1992, the duo had graduated from Georgetown, relocated to Boston, Massachusetts and self-released their debut album “There And Back Again”. While their debut record was a stripped down, acoustic affair, the duo began to expand their sound over the next few years, incorporating several backing musicians and guests on their second record, 1995's “Running On Ice”. It was at this point that the band started to gain recognition outside of their adopted home state of Boston, with two of their songs appearing on Aware Records' second compilation album.
As a response to this, the duo decided to expand into a band full time in 1996, five years after their formation as an acoustic duo. Thanks to their nonstop touring schedule and their first full band live album “Live Stages”, they picked up a devoted cult following and signed a record deal with RCA in 1998. The band were all set for a major breakthrough, and after the release of their major label debut album “Everything You Want” in 1999, the band found it with their 2000 single of the same name, which was a number one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 after 26 weeks on the chart. Its parent album went on to sell over two million copies in the U.S alone and for a moment, Vertical Horizon were one of the biggest bands in the country. Very few bands could keep up that kind of momentum and unfortunately, Vertical Horizon weren't one of them.
However, the band have flourished as the beloved cult act that they made their name as, and even after Keith Kane left the band in 2010 to pursue a solo career, Vertical Horizon continue to impress with both their live shows and their studio albums. For have more genuine longevity than the vast, vast majority of their peers and remaining a vital rock band to this very day, Vertical Horizon come highly recommended.
David Cook won a little show called American Idol back in 2008, so based on that alone, you know you can anticipate an phenomenal show from a genuinely great live musician. During his sets, you can expect to find Cook and his badass bandmates performing an array of tracks from his two studio albums, "David Cook" and "This Loud Morning", his independently released songs, and a dash of totally ace 80s jams (a decade which just happens to be his covers specialty).
His music encompasses a wide range of influences from 90s grunge-alternative to modern day rock-pop, covers themes of love, loss, and life, and are instrumentally-driven by guitar and piano. Suffice to say, Cook makes sure to offer something for everyone.
From 2008-2011, I've seen Cook perform in gigantic arenas and intimate theatres/clubs, and no matter where the stage is, he is always on and ready to deliver a rockin' show. Not only is Cook a talented singer/songwriter, he is also witty, gracious, and kind-hearted.
Every year, Cook participates in the Race for Hope marathon in Washington, DC in honour of his late brother, who lost his fight against brain cancer in 2009. He is a steadfast supporter for charity initiatives related to brain cancer research.
For all of those reasons and more, David Cook is one artist you must not miss out on whenever he's in town!
I love Howie Day, always have and I always will I have seen him in concert many times, but will never forget a show of his from way back in 2002.
I was in Cleveland and it just so happened he was playing a show at the Beachland Ballroom that night. I went and he just blew my mind. His rasp, sad, mellow voice gives me goosebumps every time.
He played through most of his favorites, chatted with the crowd a bit and overall was just fantastic. His interactions with the crowd were so real and personal I felt like he was talking to me specifically.
The highlight though was his encore. I’m a huge Oasis fan as well so when he came back on and played an acoustic stripped down version of Wonderwall I just about lost it. When someone can cover a song better than the original artist they are truly something special.
Howie is a musical genius, and unlike some of the popular artists right now, he truly has passion and it is truly him speaking and singing through his music no some manufactured auto tuned stuff written by a team of writers. It is all Howie, all the time.
Outstanding live, outstanding albums and just an outstanding person, go check him out!
If you were ever a fan of the post-grunge, ‘alternative’ rock scene that exploded in the 1990s and early 2000s- black jeans, baggy jumpers and long hair to boot- then you’re in for a treat with a Vertical Horizon gig. The quartet, begun by founders Matthew Scannell and Kieth Kane when they were still students at Washington DC’s Georgetown University back in 1991, are still bringing their brand of radio-friendly sinalong rock hits to audiences around the globe today. They haven’t lost any of their anthemic and easy-to-rock-out-to grooves and rifftastic guitar solos either- playing all their most well known classics of the last 20 years such as ‘Best I Ever Had (Grey Sky Morning)’, the foot-tapping, arm-waving ‘You’re A God’ and their singalong anthem, ‘Everything You Want’.
Their show at the Irving Arena in West Virginia two years ago proved that the era of grungy alt-rock is still alive and well, with hundreds of fans turned out to get in on the nostalgia-fest and dance the night away to some rocktastic ballads and good-time moshpit starters. While they might not be winning awards anytime soon for poetic prowess, Vertical Horizon deliver solid, rock & roll tunes and epic, searing guitar solos that leave their fans, as well as newcomers, grinning and stamping their feet for an encore.
