The mastermind of Benjamin Plant, Miami Horror took shape in 2007, after Plant began to release remixes under this moniker. His reworking of Stardust’s “Music Sounds Better” and Tegan and Sara’s “Walking With a Ghost,” became popular tracks amongst the blogosphere, catapulting Plant to internet stardom which prompted the young DJ/producer to drop out of film school to pursue his music. Remixing tracks by fellow Australian acts, Midnight Juggernauts, The Presets and Grafton Primary helped build his name in his home country, continuing to grow in his online presence.
Teaming up with electro-pop troupe Gameboy/Gamegirl, Plant produced the track, “Sweaty Wet/Dirty Damp,” to much fanfare. The success of the single prompted a continuing relationship which resulted in their EP, “Golden Ghetto Sex,” in 2008, produced by Plant. Miami Horror’s first release-proper appeared that same year with the five-track EP, “Bravado,” on the major label, Virgin Records.
With live performances, Plant is joined by Josh Moriarty (guitars, vocals), Daniel Whitchurch (bass, keyboards, guitars) and Aaron Shanahan (production, guitars, vocals). With this band, Pant has performed at several major events, including Field Day, Bog Day Out, Splendour in the Grass, as well as supporting the likes of Phoenix, Lily Allen, Simian Mobile Disco and Friendly Fires.
In 2009 Plant got his first taste of commercial success following the single, “Sometimes,” setting alight anticipation for his debut full-length, “Illumination,” which was released in August 2010. Several singles from the album gained airplay on Australian radio, with “I Look to You” getting heavy rotation on Triple J. A new single arrived in 2013, “Real Slow,” then followed by “Colours In The Sky,” teasing fans for his second album, “All Possible Futures.”
While I’m not a gamer, I have to admit that the soundtrack for Grand Theft Auto provides me with a great number of new artists to listen to. One of them has been Miami Horror, who was featured in Grand Theft Auto V. They intrigued me enough to venture to one of their live shows, and found that they are also a really lively and extremely energetic band to experience live. Going from a solo project from the brain of Benjamin Plant and evolving into a full band with Josh Moriarty, Aaron Shanahan and Daniel Whitechurch, Miami Horror has continued momentum of popularity. The venue was pretty packed, and I had gone with a friend. Shoulder to shoulder we danced and jumped to the electro-indie music. Most of the crowd knew the band much better than my friend and me, as I heard a lot of people singing along. Plant is really engaging to the crowd, taking time mid song to get the crowd to move and dance along. Since I was not as familiar as most of the crowd around me, I later found out that they played a lot of their “popular” hits like “Moon Theory,” “Colours In The Sky,” and “Summersun.”
