The Christians always brought the soul in their own unique way. The Liverpool act, originally named after the founding trio of brothers (not their religious views), had a run of chart success in the late 80s finding a large audience for their gritty and deceptive style of music. 30 years later they’re still finding new audiences for their sound and still delivering heartfelt music with all the intensity and conviction that carried them through their 80s heyday.
Their appearance isn’t what you’d typically associate with a soul group. In fact, they were once described as ‘The Temptations in ripped jeans’ but we all know that looks can be deceiving and once the vocals start there can be no doubts about the kind of group The Christians are. Frontman and founding member Garry Christian delivers his songs with a passion that has only deepened with the years gone by and as the band lay down a smooth bed for his vocals to soar over, he dominates any venue they play with his sombre tones. The feelings conveyed within their music makes it impossible for any crowd not to emotionally connect with The Christians and that’s what ultimately makes their brand of soul completely unique.
The show was good overall, Altered images opened proceedings and were very light hearted in an almost empty theatre, when the Christians arrived Garry was slightly embarrassed from the lack of turn out; however the performance was fantastic, I would have paid the money just to see the Christians and their set was full of all the hits with a fantastic cover of Marvin Gaye's Inner city blues, and I immediately bought the new album on leaving; a great cd of the aforementioned hits accompanied by a string quartet and gospel singers, chilled is not the word. I have booked to see them again in Runcorn in April.
Midge Ure rounded off the proceedings and I felt a little let down he seemed to struggle vocally, understandably on some of the top notes but 10 minutes of the show were given up to a short film about his next orchestrated album, I don't want to appear unfair but from a vocal performance Garry left the rest in his wake. Vienna was good and fade to grey was a highlight as well as tears in your eyes which for me saved Midge's set from being ok to good. But in an ideal world we can only harvest the words.
The venue was terrific. Small and atmospheric. The staff there were so helpful and welcoming. The support act (Rob Wbeeler) was very good. The Christians were outstanding. Thoroughly enjoyed our evening. And, even though we travelled all the way from Dundee, look forward to using this venue again when an act we like is on.
I hope to see The Christians performing again soon?
With out a doubt, one of the best groups to see for excellent entertainment. Garry Christian and the rest of the band are true professionals and if you want to be entertained, then get yourself along to see The Christians, they will not disappoint!!
