It’s an interesting notion in itself to try and figure out exactly what it is that makes a band an ‘alternative dance’ act - in the case of Lemonade, a three-piece from San Francisco who formed back in 2005, it’s probably something to do with the sheer intelligence of the way in which they interpolate influences from world music - there’s a lot of evidence to suggest, in particular, that they take cues from the traditional music of the Caribbean in their sound. Accordingly, that’s something that they make a conscious effort to exploit when they play live; their gigs are danceable, sure, but in a refreshingly laid-back way - you’d be best hitting the drum and bass clubs if you want something a little bit more uptempo. If you’re after a unique spin on the chillwave movement, though, and some impressively tight musicianship, Lemonade are almost certainly for you - achingly cool, but by no means inaccessible, expect a slew of further live dates to follow the release of their third LP Minus Tide this year.
