Thy Art is Murder started in 2006 in Blacktown by vocalist vocalist Brendan van Ryn, guitarists Gary Markowski and Sean Delander, bassist Josh King and drummer Lee Stanton. They released their demo entitled “This Hole Isn’t Deep Enough for the Twelve of You” and released an EP in 2008 called “Infinite Death.” The band set out on extensive touring and after two years van Ryn departed the band; unfortunately it took a year for the band to find another lead singer, Chris “CJ” McMahon. Also, bassist Mick Lowe replaced King early in 2010.
On 16 July 2010 Thy Art is Murder released their first full-length album entitled “The Adversary.” In 2011 founding member and lead guitarist Gary Markowski departed from the band and Delander decided to switch from guitar to bass, making way for Andy Marsh and Tom Brown on guitar. After touring in Europe, the band went back into the studio to record “Hate” which they released on 18 October 2012. “Hate” debuted at number 35 on the Aria Charts and reached number 1 on AIR. After the release of the album, the band set out on tour and made a number of appearances at music festivals. In early 2014 the band made headlines when McMahon encouraged fans to get onstage during their set on Brisbane leg of theSoundwave Festival tour resulting in the band getting dropped from the tour. This however, did not stop their forward movement and they continued to travel and play their live gigs.
Taking their name from the Old English Latin word for ‘executioner’, Carnifex wear their death metal influences pretty firmly on their collective sleeve. Their current lineup currently comprises just two original members - frontman Scott Lewis and drummer Shawn Cameron - as well as rhythm guitarist Cory Arford, bassist Fred Calderon and lead guitar player Jordan Lockrey. They formed in Fallbrook, California, and went onto release their debut album, ‘Dead in My Arms’, in July 2007.
That album sold over five thousand copies, despite enjoying no real widespread publicity, and that achievement in itself was enough to gain them a three-record deal with Victory Records, who would go on to put out ‘The Diseased and the Poisoned’ in 2008, ‘Hell Chose Me’ in 2010, and ‘Until I Feel Nothing’ a year later, in October of 2011. Musically, they’ve adhered pretty close to the deathcore crossover sound that characterized their early work, which in turn lends a genuine intensity to their live shows; they were part of the Never Say Die! tour in Europe in 2013. In 2014, they released their fifth studio album, and their first on the legendary Nuclear Blast - ‘Die Without Hope’. Signing to a label so important within their own genre is clear evidence of Carnifex’s current upwards trajectory.
Thy Art is Murder is a five-piece death core band from New South Wales, Sydney, Australia. They have earned themselves such a loyal following over the last decade almost.
They launch into half an hour of some of the heaviest music I’ve ever heard. It literally sounds like a nightmare, or what you would imagine the biggest zombie monster’s voice to sound like. That C.J. McMahon sure has a hefty roar on him. He spends most of the set stood on top of monitors. This opening song is lead by pretty mid tempo beat, complete with double kick drum beats performing some machine gun blasting beats, in perfect sync with the dual guitars and bass guitar. “Shadow of Eternal Sin” is borderline orchestral at the start but then comes to it’s heavy inevitable breakdown, with McMahons terrifyingly deep screams.
This music would be perfect in horror movies, and I’m actually quite surprised that there’s not that much of it in music these days to be honest. I mean a song with the title “Whore to a Chainsaw” says it all really doesn’t it.
You cannot fault Carnifex for their insane guitar riffs and ability to head bang for a ridiculous amount of time, it must take a lot of work and incredibly strong neck muscles. However this band to me sounds just like every other death core style band, as it's impossible to hear their lyrics and I don't really consider it singing when they scream so loud and high pitched that only dogs can hear them. But this band originally formed in 2005 and has more recently signed to Nuclear Blast, previous to that they were signed to Victory Records. The group has managed to release 5 full albums, which is pretty impressive. Although my view is pretty biased because I'm not really a fan of this genre of music, I do have a massive appreciation for this group as their performances are well thought out and you can tell they give it everything they have. The bands second album 'The Diseased and the Poisoned' reached number 19 on the Billboard Top Heatseekers chart and since that they managed to tour over 22 countries with bands like Unleashed and Darkest Hour. I can't help but be negative about these kinds of groups though, but after all that is what their lyrics are all based on, negativity. Their first album was actually all about self-harm and heartbreak. For people who want to hear about these subjects and like this genre of music, this band is up there with the best of them from what I can tell. They know how to get a good mosh pit going in a crowd and how to get everyone riled up with them, but they're not for everyone.
This was my first Ingested show and they blew me away. The whole tour package was amazing each band did not disappoint. The crowd had a high level of energy, the pits were brutal and I even met the singer. I got his autograph which topped off the night. For my first Ingested experience it was unbelievable. I highly recommend anyone into Slam Death Metal to see these guys live.
