Alabama Shakes big breakthrough came when they released the four-song, self-entitled EP ‘Alabama Shakes’ in September 2011. In November 2011, the band rose from relative obscurity to international stardom. The band was signed by Rough Trade Records in the United Kingdom and ATO Records in the United States. Mavis Staples began her career with her family group The Staple Sisters in 1950. Initially singing locally at churches and appearing on a weekly radio show, the Staples scored a hit in 1956 with 'Uncloudy Day' for the Vee-Jay label. In 1957 The Staple Singers took their music on the road led by family patriarch Roebuck "Pops" Staples on guitar and including vocals by Mavis and her siblings Cleotha, Yvonne, and Purvis.
They soon evolved from popular Gospel singers to become the most influential spirituality-based group in America. By the mid-1960s The Staple Singers, inspired by Roebuck's close friendship with Martin Luther King, Jr., became the spiritual and musical voices of the civil rights movement. The Staple Singers hit the Top 40 eight times between 1971 and 1975, including two No. 1 singles, 'I'll Take You There' and 'Let's Do It Again' and a No. 2 single 'Who Took the Merry Out of Christmas?'.
Mavis branched out from the group during their successful career to release solo recordings. Her first solo single while at Epic Records with The Staple Singers was 'Crying in the Chapel' which received moderate attention in the late 1960s. The single was later included in a collated album released in 1994 by Sony Music called 'Lost Soul'. Her first solo album came almost ten years later in 1969, she followed this self titled album in quick succession with 'Only for the Lonely' in 1970. A 1984 album (also self-titled) preceded two albums under the direction of rock star Prince; 1989's 'Time Waits for No One' and 1993's 'The Voice', which People magazine named one of the Top Ten Albums of 1993.
I have seen the group Alabama Shakes perform many times and all I can say is that it gets better and better each time. The latest show was absolutely mind blowing and simply fantastic to be a part of the crowd watching them live on stage.
Brittany Howard, who is the group's lead and guitarist, has one of the most powerful voices I have heard in a long time and her guitar solos are freaking awesome. Everyone had such a good time that you will find yourself singing and dancing from the beginning of the show, right up until the end. Most of their venues are very accommodating and the stage is just the group and their instruments, not much else going on the stage like you see at other shows and artists.
What I like about them is that they give their all into every single performance, no holding back and this is what the fans enjoy seeing. Their sound is mostly Blues and Southern Rock that is delivered beautifully by this group especially Brittany.
If ever they are performing, I make it a must to go see them because I know I am sure to have a blast.
Mavis Staples is one of those names that has remained in high acclaim through the decades. Incredibly the singer/songwriter who is now heading towards her 80th birthday recently performed at Glastonbury Festival and wowed crowds with her powerful gospel voice and array of hits from over her glittering career.
The Staple Singers were one of the most successful gospel acts of all time so she pays homage to her family with an upbeat cover 'If You're Ready (Come Go With Me)' to get the audience ready to dance. It is worth noting that for her age, she really does move a lot when performing although her music is full of life and soul so it would be pretty difficult not to become animated. It also helps the audience are incredibly enthusiastic as she performs as they sing, dance and cheer in all the right places. She thanks them with a truly authentic gratitude before performing a final swan song of 'I'll Take You There'.
