London punk rock band The Ruts took the world by storm during the late 80s, took a long hiatus (twenty-seven years to be more exact) and have recently rejoined to start touring the world again. They rejoined to play a benefit for original member Paul Fox who was unfortunately diagnosed with lung cancer. Since their reformation, they have continued to tour together.
Despite their long hiatus, their fans are still extremely loyal and show up by the masses. There is a large age range, from long time fans, to new lovers of punk rock.1 Also considering that they formed during the height of the punk rock band, they know how to put on a proper show. Their energy is extremely high, and the crowd just keeps feeing them the energy. They rock out so much harder than the younger people in the audience. When I went back and watched their live show from their past, I found that their current shows are a bit better because of the extreme newfound passion for making music. The chance to watch their show now is watching masters at work, and watching their chemistry together is something that you don’t see as much with newer bands.
