Creative project coined by Brighton based art students Jessica Weiss and Daniel Falvey, Fear of Men formed in 2011. Fusing pop elements with their indie sensibilities intertwined with Smiths like melodic guitars and divulging in concepts surrounding mortality, mental illness and solitude, the duo recruited Alex Flynn O’Neill and Michael Miles on bass and drums to solidify the line-up. Releasing their early material on labels Sex Is Disgusting and Italian Beach Babes gave them the freedom to experiment while refining their distinctive indie-pop sound. Their critically acclaimed debut album ‘Loom’ released via Kanine Records in 2014 provided them with the opportunity to support The Pains of Being Pure at Heart taking their live shows around North America and Europe. With dreamy lullabies in the shape of tracks like ‘Alta’ and ‘Seer’, Weiss’s vocals are captivating through her hushed tones adding to the shoe-gazy atmosphere assisted by the deep and mystical lighting. Fear of Men create the perfect balance between their indie pop sound through presenting a fitting duality of darker tracks like ‘Your Side’ and then contrasting with sunny pop elements in ‘Born’. The audience watch fixatedly as the carefree melodies carry them away into a serene atmosphere. Fear of Men conjure magical performances time after time creating calming textures as they delve into their indie-pop sensibilities.
Saw Fear of Men supporting the amazing Lower Dens last night. Was sadly underwhelmed, performance was really wishy-washy and there seemed to be no rapport on stage. Disappointed overall, but I'm sure with time they'll improve. Nice merch at least
