Harvelle's 13 Aug 2015. Tony Martinez opened solo, he is acoustic guitar and songwriter for Whitey Morgan.
Martinez stomped out on stage and opened shouting the usual rousing platitudes into a wide dynamic range mike, it physically hurt my head. I should have known what was to come from the Egnator amp head on stage left, some wise ass had outlined the sweet spot on the cabinet with electricians tape. You only do that if it's really critical, like if the channel will blow out if you don't get it right.
Martinez sang well, big voice for that big mike. Favorites were the "Everybody's Buddy" singalong and he also explained Hank Williams Sr., elements of style. H.W. used to yodel the lyrics. Tony demonstrated with a fabulous rendition of "Lovesick Blues".
However things went bad when the full band came on stage. It's a real heavy outlaw style. It was all about being drunk and whipping up the big rowdy crowd. The club
cranked it up so much it hurt my ears. Couldn't even hear the songs, and was it my imagination or was Brett Robinson (pedal
steel) playing some entirely different song? We sere sitting right next to his ShoBud, and I'll testify he was never in the same key as the band as far as I could hear, he just kind of noodled around kind of like he was the substitute teacher, he completely missed the bridge on one song. Eric Allen and the other guitar (Joey Spina?) attempted to double their parts, Townes van Zandt style, but it didn't work, they were hardly together or if they were, you couldn't hear it. My cohort and I left after about three mortar rounds went off nearby, or at least that's what the first three songs sounded like. The left side of my head hurt for 48 hours and we couldn't hear our conversation in the car going home. If you don't care about your ears, songs, or musicianship, but you like to get drunk on slop and act rowdy, then this is your band.
Hands down the best concert I've ever seen. The band was fantastic and Whitey's voice is one of the best in the business. A must see when he comes to town. Saw him in Estes Park at the Staney Hotel and seriously considering to get tickets in a few days at the Aggie in Fort Collins. If you love and appreciate real country music or even just real music and no bullshit this is the show to see. CHECK THEM OUT!
