I am a DJ fanatic, and have been to hundreds of sets of many genres over the years, but I’m compelled to review Zed Bias, as his set was like nothing I’ve seen before. The show was in a humble club, a boiler room set, and it was absolutely packed. He opened the show with his famous single from back in 2000, Neighbourhood, and had a microphone to shout out to everyone to join in. I find that DJs are usually reasonably introverted in their sets, but Zeb Bias was encouraging everyone to dance along, asking how everyone was doing, and dancing along with the crowd.
A lot of DJs play only prerecorded mixes in their sets, but Bias has a huge projector up at the back of the club so everyone could see what he was doing at the desk, and you could see him remixing live tracks, playing the synth, scratching records, and adding new samples to previously instrumental tracks. The way he was blending one track into another was awesome, and when he launched into his Scrufizzer remix of Kick It, he’d totally won over the audience and had everyone dancing like crazy.
His garage music, although a popular genre, is made original by his funk and broken beat additions. He was a wonderful performer, and the most involved DJ I’ve seen perform live.
