I recently saw Oberhofer at Brooklyn Night Bazaar with ‘A Great Big Pile of Leaves’, ‘The Canon Logic’, ‘Mt. Royal’ and ‘Tasseomancy’. I was really excited to see Oberhofer live because I have been a fan of the band since their debut album ‘Time Capsules II’ released in 2012. The band are described as ‘surf pop revial’; a sound that falls somewhere between indie dance and noise pop, characterised by jangly guitar melodies, up-tempo percussion and Brad Oberhofer’s stylised vocals. Oberhofer remind the listener of bands like The Drums, The Mystery Jets, Best Coast and Bleached as they hone their indie pop style. Playing live at Brooklyn Night Bazaar the band took their dishevelled hair cuts to the stage along an energetic and intense performance. The crowd were quickly animated by the opening song ‘Away Frm U’ with its catchy melody and raucous guitar jams. The set included songs ‘I Could Go’, ‘oOoO’, ‘HEART’, ‘Landline’, ‘Dead Girls Dance’, ‘Cruisin FDR’ and ‘You + Me (Still Together In The Future)’. The audience were breathlessly bopping along to the noise pop guitar and indie beats while on stage Oberhofer were dancing and playing with vitality. My favourite songs live were probably ‘oOoO’ and ‘Alone Man’. I love ‘oOoO’ because it’s such a good song to sing and dance to with the swirling vocals over jangly drums and guitar. I also loved ‘Alone Man’ because it’s a more a confessional song but with a brilliant instrumental section. This was a brilliant, lively gig. I will definitely see Oberhofer again.
