For more than three decades, Matmos have redefined what electronic music can be.
Drew Daniel and M.C. Schmidt transform unexpected sound sources — from everyday objects to unusual field recordings — into intricate rhythmic structures.
Balancing precision, humour and curiosity, their live performances move between sound art and experimental electronics, turning detail into immersive sound.
A rare appearance in Athens as part of the Scenius Series.
You never know what to expect from experimental electronic music duo Matmos. Matmos consisting of Martin Schmidt and Drew Daniel, former San Francisco, California natives that now reside in Baltimore, Maryland. They are partners in real life as well as in their music. They are probably best know for working with eccentric artist Bjork on her albums Vespertine (2001) and Medúlla (2004).
Matmos also has produce a prolific collection of their own music including their live album "Work, Work, Work", “The marriage of Two Minds”, and “Supreme Balloon”. Their music is filled seemly random samples that are expertly combined in a blender and pureed on high. Ironically, or maybe not, the name is Swedish for mashed food. The end product is captivating, hypnotic and strangely relaxing.
Matmos music may not be for everybody. However, it is worthwhile to listen too if you have the time. It will eventually grow on you over time. If you get a chance to go to one of their concerts, you will not regret it.
