There is no one quite like Robert Smith in the music industry. His jet-black unkempt hair, pale skin, red lipstick, and black eye-shadow have been deeply ingrained into our conception of him. Although his fashion style has had a huge influence over the genre of gothic rock, his most important impact on music stems from his genius skills of creating the most lush, atmospheric music ever written.
Robert Smith is most famously recognized as the lead singer and main songwriter of The Cure. His musical style is very unique, which includes his guitar being run through atmospheric effects such as a flanger and chorus to create the lush sounds that The Cure is so recognized for playing. His vocal style is also very unique. He sings in a tenor vocal range often producing a yearning like quality that conveys deep emotions. He also fluctuates with his vocal style, sometimes performing in a soft, gentle manner, and other times performing in a harsh punk like quality. Smith’s lyrics are also very captivating, often very introspective and personal, as well as relying on influences of literature and surrealism, which creates a moody effect.
His live performances are absolutely amazing. He wants to make sure that the audience is completely satisfied with his performance, and when playing with The Cure he has gone on to play over three hour sets, cramming every one of our favorite songs into the setlist. Most recently The Cure has been playing shows where they have performed three of their classic albums in their entirety, which includes: Three Imaginary Boys, Seventeen Seconds, and Faith. The Cure also puts on very unique theatrics when performing live, incorporating ominous lighting and projecting video footage onto a screen in the back that corresponds to themes in the songs.
