Biografía
Known as France’s answer to Frank Sinatra, Charles Aznavour has written and recorded in English, French, German, Spanish and Italian. His multilingual abilities have assured his popularity and solidified his fan base across Europe and the rest of the world. His fans include world leaders and members of several royal families.
An acting veteran as well as a musical legend, Charles Aznavour began his career at an early age on the stages of Paris. At the age of 20 Aznavour was regularly performing in nightclubs and from here he began to write his own songs. His big break, however, was to come when he was given the opportunity to open for legendary French singer Édith Piaf. Piaf adored Charles Aznavour’s voice and coached him in developing a style and performance that was sure to be a hit in France and the rest of the world.
Astoundingly, Charles Aznavour has written over 1200 songs over the course of his career and he has released 50 studio albums since 1953. His various songs have found fame in various countries all over the world, but his breakthrough English language song was “She”, which went to number one on the UK Singles chart in 1974.
In addition to Édith Piaf, Charles Aznavour has worked with a host of other artists including, but not limited to, Fred Astaire, Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, Bob Dylan, Elton John, Petula Clark, Tom Jones, Shirley Bassey, and Julio Iglesias. Aznavour’s work has also been highly sought after by artists and covers of his tracks have kept the music fresh and alive.
The winner of many awards throughout his career, Charles Aznavour was inducted into the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame in 1996. Despite performing a farewell tour in 2006, Charles Aznavour is still very much in demand and fans are unwilling to see the singer leave the stage. Despite being in his 90s, Charles Aznavour was able to sell out the Royal Albert Hall in 2013 and public demand for his show was so high the singer was forced to offer an extra date the following year. There is no doubt about the fact that Charles Aznavour is a living legend.

After all last year’s fanfare about how great The Rolling Stones are for making it to fifty years together as a band, perhaps people should turn their attentions to Charles Aznavour if they want to know the true meaning of longevity. In his ninety years on earth, the man described as France’s answer to Frank Sinatra has written thousands of songs in a slew of different languages, and sold well in excess of one hundred million records. More remarkably still, after more than seventy years in the business, he’s still going strong today, continuing to tour and perform. He’s been compared to Sinatra, sure, but perhaps it’s better to think of him as the French Leonard Cohen; despite his advancing years, when he takes the stage, he delivers his songs in a deeply-emotional, gravelly tone that men a third of his age could struggle to match in terms of profundity. He continues to play his biggest hits alongside standards and the occasional new cut, too - there’s no question that the man is a genuine legend.
Historically, France has never been known as a country to have a worldwide impact on the music industry. Although you cannot deny the influence of tenor style pop and jazz singer Charles Aznavour. Affectionately dubbed the Frank Sinatra of France, it is incredible to think that this man has been working in the industry since the 30s.
It is even more incredible to think after recently celebrating his 90th birthday, he continues to tour albeit it infrequently to the fanbase. Fans of all ages file into the lavish venue to enjoy the luscious jazz stylings of Charles Aznavour. He is joined by a huge selection of musicians, almost enough to make an orchestra who all work in total harmony to enhance the richness of his discography. It is worth noting his voice is holding even in his old age and he has a twinkle in his eye whilst onstage which may be the key thing keeping him young. There is not going to be many more opportunities to see this great musician live so grab tickets whilst you can.
