Dreamy, often weightless, Yppah crafts a spellbinding set that lifts you from the gloom and up into the clouds. As a Ninja Tune stalwart, Yppah shares his record label with artists such as Bonobo, Amon Tobin and Floating Points, so beautiful soundscapes come as standard in a live scenario. Drawing on material spread across 3 albums, Joe Corrales Jr (Yppah’s real name) is able to pick from an eclectic mix of breakbeat, downtempo and shoegaze to create a stunning and atmospheric sonic experience for his audience. Often performing with a band, he weaves from early singles such as “It’s Not The Same” into the slightly darker territory of “Never Mess With Sunday” from his critically acclaimed 2012 album “Eighty One”. The sheer number of genres that float in and out of a Yppah set make it enchanting to see how they all mingle with each other across the course of one of his concerts. Joe manages to keep all of these different styles sounding cohesive, and rather than making his set-list relatively chronological he ebbs and flows between his varied material quite a lot. The pacing, however, is absolutely perfect and keeps the audience intrigued throughout. You’ll be floating on air by the end. If you want to be swept off your feet, there’s not many out there better than Yppah. Prepare to be mesmerised.
